The story of Anjelica
Angelica arrives in English more than once. It comes as a name from Latin. It comes as a plant, the tall archangelica whose green stems were candied for centuries and whose root still goes into gin. And it comes as a character: the princess Angelica of Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, the sixteenth-century poem in which the hero loses his mind for love of her, retold in opera for two hundred years afterwards. The j-spelling is separate and American, and it does one useful thing that the g does not do reliably, which is fix the sound before anyone has to guess.
Meaning
angelic, of the angels
From Latin angelica, the feminine of angelicus. Angelica is also a plant — Angelica archangelica, a tall umbellifer whose stems are candied and whose root flavors gin and Chartreuse — which took the name from a medieval reputation as a protection against plague.

Four syllables, stress on the second. The j guarantees the soft sound in English. It does not in Spanish, where j is a throat sound and a reader will say an-HEL-ee-ka.

The Leonor test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Anjelica's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leonor climbed just as high around 1909, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leonor's path sketches the road Anjelica is walking now.
Anjelica sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The j removes the one ambiguity the g leaves behind.
- A settled Latin meaning and a long literary record.
- Angie works at once and needs no explaining.
- Angelica is the standard spelling, and this one will be corrected for life.
- In Spanish the j is a different sound entirely, so the letter that fixes the name in English unfixes it in Spanish.
- Four syllables is a lot of name before the surname arrives.
