The story of Aniello
Sant'Aniello, a sixth-century abbot of Naples, is one of the city's patrons, and Neapolitan women expecting a child have long asked for his protection. In 1647 Tommaso Aniello, a young fisherman known as Masaniello, led the poor of Naples in revolt against a Spanish tax on fruit; for little more than a week he governed the city, before he was killed. Aniello was given in America by families from Naples and the surrounding region.
