The Angles gave their name to England and the Saxons did not, which is odd given that the Saxons were more numerous and their kingdoms lasted longer. Angle-land became England; the language was called English from very early on; and the other group ended up naming only three counties.

Where it comes from

The story of Angle

The tribe came from a district in what is now Schleswig which is still called Angeln, and the name may describe the shape of the coast: the Germanic word angul meant a hook or a bend, and the same root gives the English word for a fishing hook and the verb to angle. If that is right, then England, the English language and the adjective English all descend from a description of a crooked piece of land on the Baltic, and the geometric term borrowed separately from Latin is a distant relative rather than the source. Bede says the district was left empty after they left, and it more or less was.

Not established

As an American name it is most likely a spelling of Angel with the last two letters swapped, which the record suggests strongly. As the English word it names a geometric measure, from a Latin word meaning a corner. As the tribal name it identifies the people who named England. All three are available and the record does not say.

AN-gul

Two syllables with the stress at the front, said as the English word. Families who intend it as a spelling of Angel say AYN-jul instead, and the written form gives no indication which is meant.

Angle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1975, with 52 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Angle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling is completely unambiguous once the intended reading is known.
  • Angie is a warm, established short form available immediately.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
What to consider
  • It is an ordinary English word for a geometric measure and will be read as one.
  • The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • It is very close to Angel and will be assumed to be a misspelling of it.
