Angie
Feminine · Greek roots · “messenger”
Angie is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 65,665 girls against 131 boys since 1880.
Angie has been on the American record since record-keeping began, first as the everyday form of Angela, Angelina and Angelica, then increasingly on its own. Two syllables, a soft g in the middle, and it ends on the same bright -ie that keeps a name easy to call across a yard. The Rolling Stones put it in the title of a slow ballad in the early 1970s, and it has been sung ever since.

The story of Angie
The root is the Greek angelos, a messenger — the ordinary word for someone carrying news, which the Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible used for divine messengers. Latin took it as angelus, and the feminine Angela spread through Catholic Europe, joined by Angelina and Angelica. English speakers shortened all three the same way, and Angie is the result: a familiar clipping that has been written down as a name in its own right in the United States since the earliest years of national name records. Its strongest showing today is in California, Texas and Florida, states where the Spanish and Italian long forms have deep roots.

The Patty test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Angie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Patty climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Patty's path sketches the road Angie is walking now.
Angie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds for most English speakers, and already familiar in writing — little need to repeat it letter by letter.
- Works either as a full name or as the short form of Angela, Angelina or Angelica, so a longer formal version is available if you want one.
- On the American record continuously since national name records began, without ever dropping out of use.
- Close cousins exist in Italian, Spanish, French, German and Polish, so relatives abroad will recognize it.
- Because it began as a nickname, some people will assume there is a longer name behind it and ask what Angie is short for. That is easy to answer, but it will come up.
- It is far better represented among adults than among children right now — a child named Angie will likely be the only one in her school while meeting grown women who share it.
- The Rolling Stones ballad follows the name around, so expect it to be sung at her occasionally by people old enough to remember the record.
