Where it comes from

The story of Angelynn

Angelica is a tall umbellifer with hollow stems, and the usual story of its name is that an angel appeared to a monk during a plague and revealed the plant as the remedy. It was taken seriously: angelica appears in plague remedies across Europe, it was chewed as a preventive, and it was one of the ingredients in the theriac compounds sold as universal antidotes. The stems are candied — the bright green pieces on old-fashioned cakes are this plant — and it flavors gin, chartreuse and several other liqueurs, where it supplies the earthy note underneath the juniper. It grows to two meters, it is one of very few crops that does well in Iceland, and the Sami and the Norse used it as a vegetable long before anybody had a dream about it.

Meaning

messenger, with an American ending

The Greek word means a messenger and nothing more; the celestial sense was attached to it by translators of scripture who needed a word for the beings doing the messaging. The ending added here is a free American element and the doubled n is decoration.

Fashion outlook

Angelynn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three short forms come out of it and none sounds like the others.
  • Front stress on three syllables is a comfortable English rhythm.
  • The word behind it is understood by everybody.
What to consider
  • Angelyn, Angeline and Angelin are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The doubled letter is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • The ending places the name in a particular stretch of American fashion.
