The story of Angelyna
Spanish explorers named a California river for Our Lady of the Angels, and the town founded beside it took a long form of that name; speech cut it down to Los Angeles, and then to two letters. Jean-François Millet painted The Angelus, a farm couple bowing their heads in a field as the evening bell rings; when it was sold at auction, an American association outbid the French state, and a Paris department-store owner bought it back and left it to the Louvre. Angelyna is one of the spellings American families have used.
