Where it comes from

Our story of Anesha

When ether was first used to put a patient to sleep for surgery, in Boston in the eighteen-forties, nobody had a word for what had happened. A physician in the city wrote to the surgeon involved and proposed one, assembled out of Greek: an- for without, and a root meaning sensation. Anesthesia. The letter also suggested the adjective, and both stuck immediately and everywhere. The physician was Oliver Wendell Holmes, who taught anatomy for thirty-five years and is remembered by most people for his light verse. It is a good example of what a well-made word can do: before it existed, the thing it names had just happened for the first time in history, and afterward everyone could talk about it. Anesha has no connection to the word beyond the first three letters.

Anesha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1994, with 48 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Anesha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three soft syllables with nothing difficult in them, easy to say and easy to hear.
  • Nesha and Ana are both available as short forms without any work.
  • The stress falls where an English reader expects, so first attempts usually land correctly.
What to consider
  • Two readings of the middle vowel are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • It sits close to Aneesha, Anisha and Nesha in the record and will be spelled by ear as any of them.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
