Andrina
Feminine
Andrina can be read as a feminine built on Andrew or as the tail end of a much longer name, and the record does not settle it. The saint behind either reading is the patron of a country he never went near, and the story of how he got there is pure legend with a real town on the end of it.

Our story of Andrina
Scotland's patron saint died in Greece and the relics that made him Scottish arrived, according to the legend, by shipwreck. A monk called Regulus is said to have been warned in a dream to take some of the bones and sail west until he was told to stop; he was wrecked on the Fife coast, built a shrine where he came ashore, and a settlement grew round it that became a cathedral city, a university town and eventually the home of a particular game played with sticks. The story is not history — the relics more plausibly arrived through a bishop's diplomacy in the eighth century — but the town is real, the cathedral ruins are real, and the diagonal white cross on the national flag is said to come from a vision of the saint's cross seen before a battle. A founding legend does not have to be true to have built something.

Not established
The Greek name it rests on means manly or courageous, from the word for a man as opposed to a woman. But this spelling may not rest on it directly: it may be cut from Alexandrina, which contains the same element inside a different name. Nothing in the record chooses, so the meaning cannot be given cleanly.

Fashion outlook
Andrina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Three short forms come out of it and none of them sounds like the others.
- It is uncommon while being built entirely from familiar pieces.
- Middle stress on three syllables is the most comfortable rhythm English offers.
- Andrena, Andreina and Adrina are all recorded and will be written for it.
- Stress placement is unsettled, so the name is said two ways.
- Which longer name it came from is not recorded, so the meaning has two possible routes.
