Andrianna
Feminine · “from Hadria”
Andrianna contains two complete names and belongs to neither. Adriana is Italian and Roman; Anna is Hebrew by way of Greek; put the n where this spelling puts it and the result reads as both at once, which is either a happy accident or the whole point.

The story of Andrianna
There is a third possibility that has nothing to do with either, and it is worth knowing because it is real. In Madagascar, andriana is a word of rank: it named the noble class of the Merina kingdom, the caste that supplied the sovereigns who unified most of the island in the nineteenth century, and it still appears at the front of a great many Malagasy surnames — Andrianampoinimerina, the king who began that unification, carries it in his own name. Malagasy is an Austronesian language and has no historical connection to Latin, Greek or Hebrew; the resemblance is a coincidence of syllables. But it is a coincidence with a kingdom behind it, and the word is doing work in the world today for far more people than the American spelling on this page.

from Hadria
Read as Adriana with an extra n, the name is Roman and geographical: it named a family for the town it came from. Read as Andrea plus Anna, the first element is Greek and means manly, and the second means favor. The spelling supports both readings equally, and the two derivations have nothing to do with each other. Most reference works file it under Adriana and move on, which is reasonable but not the same as certain.
How the name formed
- Hadria, a town in Italy, gives the Roman name Adrianus
- Italian and Spanish form the feminine Adriana
- Andrea and Anna supply a second possible reading
- American records carry Andrianna, which fits both

Pronouncing Andrianna
an-dree-AN-uh
Four syllables with the stress on the third. Some families front the stress instead, ANN-dree-ah-nuh, which sounds Greek rather than Italian; both are in use and neither is a mistake, so the family's version should be given early.

Fashion outlook
Andrianna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A long, flowing name with a formal shape that suits a signature
- Three or four workable short forms with entirely different characters
- Familiar in a dozen countries, so it travels without needing to be explained
- The commonest spelling has no n in the middle, and that is the version most people will write.
- Four syllables means the full name is used at ceremonies and the short form everywhere else.
- The two possible derivations point in different directions, so the meaning depends on which parent name a family claims.
