Where it comes from

The story of Andree

A Swede with this surname tried to reach the North Pole in a balloon and vanished. He and two companions lifted off from Spitsbergen in eighteen ninety-seven, the balloon iced up and came down within days, and they walked and drifted south across the pack ice until they died on an island that autumn. Nothing was heard for thirty-three years, when a sealing ship found the camp: the bodies, the diaries, and rolls of exposed film. The film was developed and most of it came out. There are photographs of the crashed balloon taken by men who did not survive the week.

Andree sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2011, with 27 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Andree went to 23 boys in 2025, but Andre is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 891, which makes it the 349th most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,047 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,917 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 74,264 for Andree itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The double e removes an ambiguity the accentless spelling creates.
  • Dre works as a short form and is entirely current.
  • The name travels across most of Europe unchanged.
What to consider
  • In French this is the woman's spelling, which travelers will notice.
  • The record holds girls as well, and the girl is the smaller side.
  • The stress is genuinely unsettled between the two readings.
