Andon
Masculine
Andon is the Bulgarian and Macedonian form of Anthony, and it is also a Japanese word that has become a term of art in every factory in the world. An andon is a paper lantern; on a production line it is the light that goes on when something is wrong, and the cord that any worker can pull to stop the whole line.

The story of Andon
The andon cord is one of the most quoted ideas in manufacturing. The principle is that anybody on the line, however junior, can stop production the moment they see a defect — and that stopping is treated as the correct response rather than a failure. The alternative, letting a problem travel down the line to be fixed later, costs far more. What made it remarkable was the trust it required in both directions: the worker must be willing to stop the line, and the company must be willing to have it stopped. Firms have been copying the cord for forty years and mostly failing to copy the trust.

As a Balkan name this is Anton with the vowel worn down, from the Roman clan name that Rome itself could not explain. As a Japanese word it is unrelated: an andon is a traditional lamp, a paper-covered frame around a light, and the word was applied to the signal lights hung above an assembly line because that is what they looked like. An American record cannot tell you which of these, if either, a family had in mind.

Fashion outlook
Andon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, plain and impossible to mispronounce badly in English.
- Andy and Don are both available and belong to different registers.
- It carries a very old Roman name without any of the weight of Anthony.
- It will be heard as Anton, Landon and Brandon by people meeting it once.
- The stress placement differs between the Balkan and American readings.
- There is no meaning to give him, because Roman clan names generally have none.
