Ancil
Masculine
Ancil is a name that looks like it should have an obvious explanation and does not. It ran in American records from the 1880s to the First World War, mostly in the Midwest and the upper South, and then thinned out. Two respectable sources have been proposed for it and neither can be demonstrated, which puts it in the large company of American names that are older than the paperwork that would explain them.
How old is the name Ancil?

The story of Ancil
The Ancil the record remembers ran a boxing gym in Sacramento. Ancil Hoffman managed Max Baer through the early 1930s and was in the corner the night Baer put Primo Carnera on the canvas eleven times to take the heavyweight championship of the world — a fight so one-sided that the referee stopped it in the eleventh. Hoffman stayed in Sacramento afterwards, went into county government, and gave the city a park that still carries his name. It is a good example of what the name has always been: not famous, but attached to somebody who did something specific and can be looked up.

The two candidates are Anselm, a Germanic name that gave English the short forms Ansel and Ancel, and the English surname Ancell, which comes from the same place. Either would produce Ancil without any difficulty. There is also a false friend that people reach for and should not: the Latin ancilla, a household maidservant, which gave English the word ancillary — literally, belonging to a handmaid. It is a good word history and it has nothing to do with this name. Nobody in the nineteenth-century Midwest was naming a son after a Roman servant.

Fashion outlook
Ancil sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, no silent letters, and a shape that matches names people already know.
- It is genuinely rare without being invented, which is a narrow and useful category.
- The soft c gives it a quietness that the harder A-names of the same era do not have.
- There is no meaning to hand him, and the meaning people will guess at is the wrong one.
- Strangers will read it with a hard c the first time and will need correcting.
- It sits close enough to Ansel and Anselm that both will be substituted for it regularly.
