Anselm of Canterbury set out to prove that God exists using nothing but the definition of the word. The argument runs, very roughly, that God is that than which nothing greater can be conceived, that a thing existing in reality is greater than the same thing existing only in the understanding, and therefore that the definition cannot be satisfied by something that does not exist. A monk objected in writing almost immediately with an example about a perfect island. Descartes revived it, Kant thought he had killed it, and twentieth-century logicians rebuilt it in modal terms. Nine hundred years on there is still no agreement about where, exactly, it goes wrong.
