Amery peaked in 2009, reaching #3561 nationally. Today it ranks #4987, 1,426 places below that high. See the whole 2009 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Amery

Amalric was a Visigothic and Frankish name that the Normans carried to England as Aimeri and Emery, where it became a surname and a modest first name. Italian made it Amerigo, and a Florentine navigator of that name had his given name attached to two continents by a German mapmaker in 1507, which is the single strangest afterlife any personal name has had. Amery is the English spelling, now used for girls as often as boys.

Meaning

work and power; industrious ruler

Germanic amal, work or labor, joined to ric, power or rule. The same amal opens Amelia and the same ric closes Frederick and Heinrich. Amaury, Emery and Amerigo are all the same compound in different mouths.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries a documented Germanic compound with relatives across five languages.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which some families want.
  • The connection to the naming of the Americas is a genuinely good story to have.
What to consider
  • Emery is the commoner English spelling and will be written instead.
  • Two pronunciations circulate and the spelling settles neither.
  • Amery, Emery and Avery are close enough to be confused in speech.
