In the US it has never been loud, but it has been present in the records since the nineteenth century.

The story of Amelie
The name begins with amal, a Germanic word for work or effort that fed a whole family of early medieval names. Latinized as Amalia, it settled into the naming stock of German-speaking noble houses, and from there passed into French as Amélie and into English as Amelia during the eighteenth century, when Hanoverian connections made the name familiar in Britain. The French form kept its own shape and its own stress, and traveled independently — which is why English speakers today meet Amelie and Amelia as two spellings with two different rhythms rather than one name with a variant. The 2001 French film titled Amélie gave the spelling a fresh push in the English-speaking world.
Meaning
From the Germanic element amal, "work" or "effort"
The amal root is the accepted source, shared with the older names Amalia and Amalberga. It is worth knowing that Amelie/Amelia and the Latin Aemilia (English Emily, Emilia) are separate names that have been blurred together for centuries because they sound alike — they are not related.

The Dominque test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amelie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dominque climbed just as high around 1985, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dominque's path sketches the road Amelie is walking now.
Amelie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Sits inside a spelling family — Amelia, Amalia, Amelie — that almost everyone already recognizes, so the letters rarely have to be explained twice.
- Works in French, German, Spanish, Italian and English with only small adjustments, which matters in a family that crosses languages.
- Several ready-made short forms that stand on their own: Amy, Millie, Lia.
- Also appears in the current rankings in England and Wales, so it is not a US-only spelling.
- It will be mistaken for Amelia constantly, in both directions. The two are close cousins, and a child named Amelie should expect to correct people politely for life.
- The AM-uh-lee and ah-may-LEE pronunciations both belong to this spelling, so the name arrives without a single settled reading. Choosing one and saying it consistently saves a lot of small negotiations.
- For many adults the spelling calls up the 2001 French film first. That association is a pleasant one, but it does date the name to a particular moment for anyone who remembers it.
