The story of Dominque
The order that carries this name gave itself a joke about it. The Dominicans, founded by Dominic de Guzman in the thirteenth century, were called in Latin the Dominicani, and the friars themselves cheerfully read that as Domini canes, the hounds of the Lord, which is why medieval painters put a black and white dog at Dominic's feet holding a torch. The name spread across Catholic Europe with the order. French made it Dominique and gave it to sons and daughters alike; America took the French spelling, kept it mainly for daughters, and began trimming it. Dominque is the shortest of the trimmings still in the record.
Meaning
of the Lord
From the Latin dominicus, belonging to the master or lord. The name has been given for centuries to children born on a particular day of the week, and the ending carries no meaning beyond marking the form as French.

Fashion outlook
Dominque sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The name is recognized across every Catholic country in Europe and the Americas.
- Nikki and Dom are established short forms that sound nothing alike.
- The meaning is settled and easy to explain in a sentence.
- Dominique is the standard spelling and will be restored by every form and autocorrect.
- The missing i changes the syllable count, so the name will be said two different ways.
- The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls, and in France the full name belongs to both.
