Amedeo
Masculine · “love God”
Amedeo is a sentence rather than a word: it tells the bearer to love God, in the imperative. Italian has very few names built that way. The Latin version of it belongs to a composer who never used it and whose actual middle name was Greek.

The story of Amedeo
Mozart was christened Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus, and the last of those is Greek for a lover of God. He never used the Latin translation of it in ordinary life. He signed himself Wolfgang Amadè, in the French form, on letters and on scores; occasionally Amadeo, in Italian; and Amadeus almost only as a joke, in mock-formal contexts. The name the world now uses for him is a nineteenth-century tidying-up by editors and biographers, reinforced in the twentieth by a play and a film. It is the standard fate of a famous person's name: whatever the archive says, the version that circulates is the one that sounds right to the people doing the circulating, and it is usually the grandest available.
Meaning
love God
A Latin imperative compound joining the verb to love with the word for God, which Italian inherited whole. Names of this shape — a command rather than a description — are common in Hebrew and rare in Romance languages, which makes this one unusual.

Fashion outlook
Amedeo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a complete sentence and is fully documented.
- It is at home in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese without alteration.
- Every syllable is open, which makes it easy to say once the length is accepted.
- Four syllables is long for forms designed around shorter names.
- Amadeo and Amadeus will both be written for it.
- English speakers will compress it and move the stress forward.
