The story of Amaury
Amalric I and II were kings of Jerusalem in the crusader period, and the name was well used among the Norman and French nobility. French phonology dropped the l, giving Amaury, which looks unrelated to Emery until the intermediate forms are laid out. It is used in France and in French-speaking Africa and reaches American records with those families.
Meaning
ruler of work
From Germanic amal, work or labor, and ric, a ruler; the same compound gives Emmerich and English Emery. French wore Amalric down to Amaury by dropping the l.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Kimmie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amaury's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kimmie climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kimmie's path sketches the road Amaury is walking now.
Amaury sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
