Amariya
Feminine
Amariya has a genuine Hebrew candidate. Amariah appears several times in the Hebrew Bible as a priestly name, and it is built from two ordinary elements — a verb about speaking and the name of God. Whether the modern American name descends from it, or was built from Amari plus a fashionable ending, cannot be determined. Its peak is 2009.

The story of Amariya
The -yah and -iah names are among the most numerous in the Hebrew Bible: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nehemiah, Amariah. Each is a short statement with God as subject, and the pattern was still generating new names in the later biblical period. English-speaking Protestants took up the prominent ones and left the minor ones, which is why Amariah is unfamiliar. Meanwhile American naming from the 1990s produced Amari, Amara and Amiya independently, and the -iya ending was available to combine with any of them. Amariya sits where the two histories overlap.

'Yahweh has said' or 'Yahweh has promised', in the Hebrew reading
Hebrew Amaryah joins amar, 'he said, he promised', to yah, the shortened divine name — so the sense is that God has spoken or promised. It appears repeatedly in Chronicles and Ezra as a priestly name. That is a settled etymology for Amariah. Whether Amariya descends from it is the open question: the name is equally readable as Amari, a modern American name with no traceable origin, plus the -iya ending detached from Aaliyah.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Amariya went to 19 girls in 2025, but Amariah, Amaria and Amariyah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 386, which makes it the 602nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,514 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 4,164 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 84,593 for Amariya itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Clark test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amariya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Clark climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Clark's path sketches the road Amariya is walking now.
Amariya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Amari and Mari are both usable short forms already in independent use.
- It has a possible Hebrew ancestry with a genuinely settled meaning.
- The spelling is phonetic and gives English readers no difficulty.
- Amariya, Amariyah and Amariah all circulate and are easily confused.
- The Hebrew descent is plausible but not documented, so the meaning needs a qualifier.
- Four syllables is long for everyday use, so a short form is effectively required.
