Where it comes from

Our story of Amaiyah

Ours, offered as ours. Amaia is a genuinely interesting neighbor: it comes from a Basque historical novel of 1879 about the end of the Basque independence, and the word means an end or completion. It became one of the most-used Basque women's names on the strength of that book. Amaiyah in American records almost certainly comes from the -iyah workshop instead, and the Basque novel is worth naming without being claimed.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source is established. Basque Amaia means an end or a conclusion and comes from a nineteenth-century novel. Japanese Amaya is a night rain. The Ama- opening and -iyah ending of American naming are the likelier source.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Amaiyah went to 35 girls in 2025, but Amaya, Amaia and Amayah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 8 spellings went to 2,743, which makes it the 105th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,962 places above the chart.

and 2 rarer spellings.

About 1 girl in 586 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 45,922 for Amaiyah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths

  • Open vowels make it easy to say in most languages.

What to consider
  • Amaiyah, Amaya and Amaia are all in use and none is dominant.
  • Seven letters is a fair amount for early handwriting.
  • There is no documented meaning for this spelling.
