The story of Amaan
Classical Islamic law made aman a formal institution: a non-Muslim who received it became a musta'min, safe from harm and free to travel and trade, and the grant could be made by any Muslim, not only a ruler. It underpinned centuries of commerce across a religious frontier. The word is the ordinary one for safety and the name is used across the Muslim world and South Asia.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
