Where it comes from

The story of Alysha

Adalheidis was a tenth-century empress and saint, and her name was shortened across Europe in every direction — Alice in France and England, Adelheid in Germany, Aleida in the Low Countries. Alicia is the Latin form used in charters, and it re-entered English use in the nineteenth century. Twentieth-century America respelled it freely: Alisha, Alysha, Aleesha and Alicia all appear, said almost identically.

Meaning

of noble kind

From Germanic adal, noble, and heid, a kind or sort — the same compound behind Adelaide. Norman French shortened Adelheidis to Aalis and English took it as Alice; Alicia is the medieval Latin form of the same.

Alysha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 590 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alysha went to 44 girls in 2025, but Alisha and Alishah are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 233, which makes it the 729th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,730 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 6,898 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 36,529 for Alysha itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning with a documented line back to a tenth-century empress.
  • Ally is a plain short form that works at any age.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
What to consider
  • Alicia and Alisha are both more written and the spelling will be asked for constantly.
  • The middle vowel is unsettled between LEE and LISH.
  • It is strongly associated with a particular decade of American naming.
