The story of Alvie
The unisex -ie name is one of the clearest features of American naming before about 1930 and one of the least remarked on. A great many pet forms were simply not sex-marked: a Jessie or a Willie or an Ollie could be either, and the records show both in numbers. What happened afterwards is the usual one-way traffic — the names went to girls or fell out of use entirely, and very few of them stayed neutral. Alvie is one that has not quite committed. It leans one way in the record without settling, which for a name of this age is unusual and is worth knowing before a form asks the question.

elf friend
Usually a pet form of Alvin or Alvina, from Old English Aelfwine — aelf, an elf, with wine, a friend. It also serves Alva and Alvah, which is a name in Genesis belonging to an Edomite chief and has no established meaning. Which parent stands behind a particular Alvie is not recorded.
