Where it comes from

The story of Alverta

The province has a documented naming. Princess Louise Caroline Alberta was Queen Victoria's fourth daughter and the wife of a Governor General of Canada, and the territory was named for her fourth name in eighteen eighty-two — which also produced Lake Louise a few miles away, named for the first. Alberta the woman's name spread from the Germanic Albert in the ordinary way and was in American use before the province existed. Alverta appears alongside it, and the v is either a slip that stuck or a deliberate move toward a different family.

Meaningscholars disagree

noble and bright

If the name is Alberta with a v, the Germanic compound means noble and bright. If it is Alvera with an added ending, it means faith or truth at one remove. The record does not distinguish.

Fashion outlook

Alverta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Every part of it is familiar, so the name is read correctly at sight.
  • It carries three short forms with quite different characters.
  • It has an unbroken run in American records from the first year they were kept.
What to consider
  • Alberta and Alverta are one letter apart and will be confused constantly.
  • Its parentage is genuinely double, so the meaning depends on the family.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the turn of the twentieth century.
