Alvan
Masculine · “elf-friend”
Alvan is the spelling American records kept while Alvin took the traffic. It belongs to men born before the First World War, usually handed down from a father or a grandfather, and it never came back afterwards. One letter is the whole difference between the two forms, and in ordinary speech that letter does no work at all — which is why an Alvan spends his life spelling himself out loud.

The story of Alvan
The most consequential Alvan in America ground glass. Alvan Clark began as a portrait painter in Massachusetts and turned to making telescope lenses in middle age, working with his sons out of a shop in Cambridgeport. On the last night of January 1862 his son, Alvan Graham Clark, was testing a new eighteen-and-a-half-inch objective on Sirius when he saw a faint point of light beside the brightest star in the sky — the companion Friedrich Bessel had argued must be there but nobody had ever seen. Alvan Clark and Sons went on to grind the largest refracting lenses ever made, including the forty-inch at Yerkes, which no one has surpassed in more than a century.
Meaningscholars disagree
elf-friend, if it is read as a spelling of Alvin
Alvan is normally treated as a variant of Alvin, an English name assembled out of Old English elements that were already blurring together by the Middle Ages. There is also a biblical Alvan, and he is worth a minute even though he is not the source. Genesis lists a son of Shobal called Alvan; the parallel list in First Chronicles gives the same man as Alian. Nothing separates the two but a single stroke: in the Hebrew square script vav and yod are the same mark at two lengths, and a copyist with a tired hand turns one into the other. Both readings sit in the same book, and the book does not choose between them.

The second syllable is unstressed, so the vowel flattens to almost nothing and Alvan and Alvin sound identical in ordinary speech. The spellings only separate on paper, which is where the confusion lives.

Fashion outlook
Alvan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is instantly readable — nobody has to be taught how to say it, only how to write it.
- Al is waiting inside it, a short form that has never needed explaining to anyone.
- A boy called Alvan will not meet another one, and the name still looks like an ordinary English name rather than an invention.
- It will be written Alvin by teachers, doctors and forms for the whole of his life. That is not an occasional slip; it is the default.
- The name reads as a great-grandfather's, and it has not had the revival that other names of its generation have had.
