The story of Alonza
Alfonso is the royal name of medieval Iberia in the way that Louis is of France, and the numbering runs so high that historians have to say which kingdom they mean. One of them assembled a code of law, another a vast book of songs to the Virgin, another commissioned astronomical tables good enough to be used across Europe for three centuries. From the kings the name went to everyone else, and Spanish produced Alonso as its everyday form — a genuine parallel form rather than a corruption, in use alongside Alfonso for centuries. Alonza is the a-ending version, and although an -a ending usually marks a girl's name in English, the American record gives this spelling almost entirely to boys, as the name's history predicts.

noble and ready
The name is Germanic, and its two elements are argued over: the first is read as noble or as all, the second as ready, eager or battle. Several different Germanic compounds appear to have fallen together into one Spanish name.

Fashion outlook
Alonza sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It sits behind one of the great royal names of Europe, with a documented history of more than a thousand years.
- It has forms in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese and is recognized in all three.
- Every sound in it is easy for an English speaker.
- The a ending pulls the name toward the women's side in English, and the record follows.
- Alonzo is the far commoner American spelling and will be written instead.
- It reads as a name of the nineteenth century in the United States.
