The story of Almon
Almon Brown Strowger ran a funeral business in Kansas City in the eighteen eighties and became certain that calls for undertakers were being routed to a competitor whose wife worked the switchboard. Whether or not he was right, his response was disproportionate in the best way: he worked out a mechanism that would let a caller select a destination directly, without a human in the middle, and patented it. The Strowger switch became the basis of automatic telephone exchanges across the world and stayed in service for the better part of a century. The name itself he got from the American habit of reading the Old Testament as a name catalog, taking towns, tribes and minor figures alike and putting them on children, which is how the registers of the period ended up full of places nobody could find on a map.

hidden
The Hebrew place name is usually connected to a root meaning hidden or concealed, and that reading is the standard one, though place names are frequently older than the language that explains them and this one may well be. What can be said with more confidence is that it is a town rather than a person: it appears in a list of settlements assigned to the Levites, and no individual in scripture carries it.

Fashion outlook
Almon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

- It will be heard as Alton, Alvin or Almond by anyone meeting it for the first time.
- The spelling is on the register for girls as well as boys, in small numbers.
- It is very firmly of the nineteenth century and has had no revival.
