Our story of Almer
Christian Almer was a guide from Grindelwald, and in the year the English climber Alfred Wills made the Wetterhorn climb that is often said to have opened the golden age of mountaineering, Almer and a friend raced his party to the summit carrying a young fir tree, which they planted at the top. Almer went on to make first ascents across the Alps. The American Almer most likely grew from Elmer, but it shares a name with a man who carried a tree up a mountain for the joy of it.
