Where it comes from

The story of Allysa

Lyssa in Greek is rage and specifically the rage of a rabid animal; there is a goddess of it in the tragedies. The plant alyssum was named by classical writers as a remedy and the name stuck to it through Latin and into modern botany, which is why a small white garden flower carries a word about hydrophobia. Whether any Alyssa is named for the flower is another question — the name appears in America in the twentieth century and its family includes Alicia and Elissa, which have nothing to do with plants. This spelling doubles the l and drops one s, which is two decisions at once.

without madness

If the name comes from the flower, that is the Greek behind it. The name may equally be a respelling of Alicia or Elissa, and the flower connection is a modern reading rather than a documented line.

Fashion outlook

Allysa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The stress in the middle gives it a lift most English names of its length do not have.
  • Ally works as a short form and stands alone as a name.
  • Every sound in it is straightforward for an English speaker.
What to consider
  • Alyssa, Alissa and Allysa are all in the record and will be confused constantly.
  • The flower reading is attractive and not documented.
  • It is heavily generation-marked to the closing decades of the twentieth century.
