Aliyanna
Feminine · “high”
Aliyanna joins two complete names into one. Aliyah is a genuine Arabic name meaning high or exalted; Anna is the Greek form of Hannah, meaning grace. Compounding two full names rather than a front and a suffix produces a longer word with two clear halves, and its peak is 2016.

Our story of Aliyanna
There is a practical difference between compounding two names and adding a suffix, and it shows up in how a name ages. A suffix dates: -iyah, -lyn and -leigh each belong to a decade, and a name carrying one will always be placeable. A second name does not date in the same way, because names like Anna, Rose and Grace have been in use for centuries and will be in use for centuries more. Aliyanna's second half is that kind of element. Whether the family intended Anna or simply liked the ending, the effect is the same: the name is anchored at the back by something that has never been out of fashion anywhere, and only the front will place it in a decade. That is a more durable construction than most modern compounds achieve, whether or not it was designed that way.
Meaningscholars disagree
'high, exalted' joined to 'grace'
If the compound is read as Aliyah plus Anna, both halves have settled meanings: Arabic aliya, from a root about height, and Greek Anna from Hebrew Hannah, 'grace'. That reading is plausible and not documented. The name may equally be Aliya extended with the -anna ending, in which case the second half carries nothing. Both constructions produce the same spelling, and the record cannot distinguish them.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Delayne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aliyanna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Delayne climbed just as high around 1946, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Delayne's path sketches the road Aliyanna is walking now.
Aliyanna sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Ali and Anna are both complete, universally known names available as short forms.
- The second half is a name that has never gone out of fashion, which anchors the whole.
- The spelling is phonetic and gives English readers no real difficulty.
- Four syllables is long for everyday use, so a short form is effectively required.
- Aliyanna, Aliyana and Aliana all circulate, so records will drift.
- Whether the second half is Anna or a suffix cannot be settled.
