Where it comes from

The story of Alika

Hawaiian adapted English names to its own sound system, and Alec became Alika. After the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, an 1896 law made English the only language of instruction in Hawaii's schools, and for most of the twentieth century Hawaiian was in decline. The Hawaiian renaissance of the nineteen-seventies turned that around: the state constitutional convention of 1978 made Hawaiian an official language of the state, alongside English, and Hawaiian-medium schools followed. In the American record Alika is given to boys and girls in almost equal numbers.

Hawaiian form of Alec, from Alexander, 'defender of the people'

For boys Alika is the Hawaiian rendering of Alec or Alex. Girls' Alikas may come from Alice or Alicia or from other sources, and the record cannot separate the two groups.

Alika sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2016, with 21 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Alika sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A real Hawaiian name with a documented source.
  • Works for boys and girls alike in the American record.
  • Short and easy to say.
What to consider
  • Because it is split almost evenly between the sexes, people will not know which to expect from the name alone.
  • Outside Hawaii it will be new to most people.
  • Some will say AL-ih-kuh; a gentle correction settles it.

Nobody names a baby alone.
