Remove one letter from Alicia and the c changes its job. In Alicia the i after the c softens it into a sh; in Alica there is nothing to soften it, and the letter falls back on its hard value. One deleted vowel turns a-LEE-shuh into AL-i-kuh, which is a great deal of work for a letter that says nothing itself.

Where it comes from

The story of Alica

This spelling is not only an American variant. Alica is the standard form of Alice in Slovak, where it is an ordinary name with an ordinary pronunciation, and Slovak spelling is regular enough that nobody there has to think about the c: it is always a ts sound, so the name is AH-lee-tsa and could not be anything else. English has no such guarantee. Its c inherited two values from Latin by way of French, hard before a, o and u and soft before e, i and y, and every English speaker applies that rule without being taught it. When an American family drops the i from Alicia, they are usually writing the name they already say; when a Slovak family writes Alica, they are writing the only spelling available.

Meaning

Noble kind

The name descends from a Germanic compound joining a word for noble to one meaning sort or kind, worn down through French to Alice and then Latinized back up to Alicia. The meaning belongs to the whole chain and none of the respellings alters it. What the respellings alter is how the name is read aloud, and this one alters it more than most.

Pronouncing Alica

AL-i-kuh

Three syllables with the stress at the front if the spelling is read as English. Families who intend it as a form of Alicia say a-LEE-shuh regardless, and Slovak speakers say AH-lee-tsa. All three are current and the spelling supports each.

Alica sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1984, with 40 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Alica sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a real and standard name in central Europe rather than an American invention.
  • Short, clean and free of silent letters once the reading has been settled.
  • Ali and Ally are both current everyday forms available immediately.
What to consider
  • Three live pronunciations, and the spelling chooses none of them, so the name has to be introduced.
  • Alicia is overwhelmingly commoner in America and will be assumed by anyone taking dictation.
  • The hard c reading is what an English reader will produce cold, which may not be what the family intends.
