Algie is short for Algernon, and Algernon began as a joke about facial hair. When the Normans arrived in England they were clean-shaven and the English were not; one of the incoming lords wore a mustache anyway, and the Norman French nickname for him meant, roughly, the one with the whiskers. It stuck, descended in his family for eight hundred years, and ended up on Victorian children.

The story of Algie
The nickname belonged to a member of the Percy family, and the Percys kept it in use as a first name generation after generation, which is how a description of one man's face became a name carried by earls. In the nineteenth century it escaped the family and became a general upper-class English name, at which point it acquired the connotation it now has: silly, well-off, harmless. Wilde put an Algernon in his best play, a young man in debt who invents an invalid friend to get out of engagements, and the association was fixed permanently. The short form here is American and much plainer than the full name, and it was in ordinary use in the registers for both sons and daughters at a period when the full version would have sounded absurd on either.
Meaning
with moustaches
From a Norman French phrase describing whiskers, applied as a nickname and then inherited as a personal name. The derivation is documented and not disputed. It is one of the very few English aristocratic names whose origin is a physical description of a specific identifiable person, which makes it unusually well attested and unusually undignified.
How the name formed
- A Norman French nickname about whiskers
- Inherited in the Percy family for centuries
- A general English upper-class name by the nineteenth century
- Algie as the plain American short form

Two syllables, stress on the first, with a soft g. It is unfortunately close to the word for pond weed, which has the same two syllables and the same stress and differs only in the final vowel.
