Each one describes the crossing rather than the village that grew beside it, which tells you which came first. The surname belongs to families from one of those places, and it became an American given name in the nineteenth century alongside Milford, Sanford and Clifford. The resemblance to Alfred is a coincidence of the first syllable and it has confused people for two centuries.

A competing reading takes the first element as a personal name, Ealda, giving Ealda's ford. Both are ordinary constructions. What the name is not is a variant of Alfred, which joins the words for elf and counsel and shares only its first syllable.
