Where it comes from

The story of Alfonza

The kingdom the name comes from destroyed itself with a rule about succession. The Visigoths made their kings elective rather than hereditary — the nobles chose, which was meant to prevent tyranny and prevented stability instead — and the result was a monarchy in which almost every reign began or ended in a coup. Contemporaries called it the Gothic disease. When an invading army crossed from Africa in the eighth century the kingdom was in the middle of yet another disputed succession, and it collapsed in about three years.

Meaningscholars disagree

noble and ready

A Visigothic compound and the elements are argued over. The second half is generally taken as ready or eager, the first as noble, and competing reconstructions exist for both.

The trade-off

  • The rhythm is confident and the name carries well at length.
  • It reaches back to one of the oldest royal names in Iberia.

  • The final a reads as feminine to English speakers, which the record contradicts.
  • Alfonso is standard in every language that owns the name.
  • The generation that used it in America is now very old.
