Alexius
Feminine · “defender”
Alexius is given to both — 1,515 girls and 135 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Alexius is a Latin masculine ending given to American daughters, which is a small act of grammatical defiance. The -ius ending is as masculine as Latin gets; it closes Julius, Marius, Claudius and the entire Roman naming system. Handed to a girl in twentieth-century America it becomes something else, and the saint behind it is one of the strangest figures in the medieval calendar.

The story of Alexius
The legend is bizarre and was enormously popular. A wealthy Roman leaves on his wedding night, lives as a beggar in Syria for years, and eventually returns to his own house without revealing himself, where he is given a place under the staircase and lives there as an unrecognised servant for seventeen years, watching his family grieve for him. He is identified only after his death, from a letter in his hand. Medieval audiences found this profoundly moving, and the story was told across Europe in a dozen languages. Modern readers tend to find it appalling on behalf of the family, which is a fair response and one that medieval commentators occasionally shared. The saint may not have existed; the story is the point, and it was one of the most retold narratives of the Middle Ages.
Meaning
defender
From a Greek verb meaning to ward off or defend, which produced a family of names including the one carried by a Macedonian king. The reading is settled. The Latin ending marks the name as masculine in the language it comes from, and American usage has simply disregarded that, which happens to a good many classical endings once they leave their grammar behind.
How the name formed
- A Greek verb about warding off danger
- Alexius as a Latin and Byzantine name
- A widely told legend of a man under the stairs
- Given to American daughters in the later twentieth century

Fashion outlook
Alexius sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Lexi and Alex are both immediate and both stand alone as complete names.
- It is a genuine Latin and Byzantine name rather than a modern formation.
- The full form is distinctive in a way that the short forms are not.
- The ending is masculine in Latin, and anyone who knows that will notice.
- It will be written Alexis or Alexia by nearly everybody who hears it.
- The saint's legend is genuinely uncomfortable and worth reading before choosing the name for it.
