The story of Alexiana
Two Greek words meet in one English spelling. The name comes from alexein, to defend, which also gives Alexander and Alexis; the medical word comes from a privative alpha and lexis, so it means without reading. Alexia, sometimes called word blindness, was described in the 1890s in patients who could see and speak normally but could no longer read, and it became one of the classic localizing signs in neurology, since it can follow damage to a specific part of the left hemisphere. The pairing is a good demonstration of why a name cannot be translated by looking at its letters: two roots that share four sounds have produced a name meaning defender and a word meaning unable to read.
Meaning
Greek alexein, to defend
Alexiana is built on Alexia, a feminine of Alexis, from Greek alexein, to ward off or defend. The clinical term alexia is a different word, from a- and lexis, speech or reading, and the two are unrelated despite the identical spelling. The peak is 2009.
