The conqueror's fame is not what spread his name. A largely fictional life of him, assembled in Alexandria a few centuries after his death and wrongly attributed to his court historian, became one of the most widely copied books in the world: translated into Latin, Armenian, Syriac, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Ethiopic, Old French, Middle English, Mongolian and around eighty other languages, and reworked in each. In it he talks to trees, descends to the seabed in a glass barrel, flies in a basket pulled by griffins and debates with Indian philosophers. The Quran's Dhul-Qarnayn is generally identified with the figure of these stories. Across most of Eurasia the name arrived attached to that book rather than to any historical campaign, which is why it is ordinary in places his armies never reached.
