The English phrase for somebody too pleased with their own cleverness may be named after a real person: a New York thief of the eighteen-forties whose method was so neat that the police who caught him used his name for the type ever afterwards. The evidence is thin and the story is old.

Where it comes from

The story of Aleck

The confidence man in the story worked with his wife, who would pick a client's pocket while he waited outside; when the police found out they took a share to look the other way, and he then began cheating them too, which is what got him arrested. The officers, so the account goes, called him a smart Aleck and the phrase stuck. It first appears in print a few decades later, which is either a normal delay for a spoken phrase or a sign that the story was attached afterwards to explain a word that already existed. Etymologists have never resolved it. What is certain is that the phrase is American, that it dates from the middle of the nineteenth century, and that the name in it is this one.

Meaning

Defender of men

Greek alexein, to ward off, and andros, man. The full name is Alexander and this is one of two very different short forms English makes from it: Scotland cut it after the first syllable and produced Alec, and England cut it after the second and produced Alex. Both are old and neither is a version of the other.

AL-ik

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The ck is the English spelling after a short vowel and the plain c is the borrowed one, so this version looks more English than Alec does, which is the reverse of what most people assume.

Aleck sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 32 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Aleck sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, firm and easy to say, with one of the best-documented names in Europe behind it.
  • Three short forms available, from the antique Sandy to the entirely modern Lex.
  • The ck makes the spelling unambiguous, which the plain c does not quite.
What to consider
  • The phrase smart Aleck is universally known and children will use it.
  • Alec is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected by British readers especially.
  • It reads as a shortening and leaves nothing more formal on the certificate.
