The story of Aldon
The Anglo-Saxon name stock collapsed after 1066, replaced within two generations by Norman names, and survived mainly in surnames. Eald names came through that way: Alden, Aldous, Aldridge, Aldwin. American use of them as given names belongs to the nineteenth-century surname fashion, reinforced in New England by John Alden of the Mayflower. Aldon is the less common spelling and its peak in 1908 sits with the rest of that cohort — Wilton, Milton, Carlton, Alton and Aldon all cluster in the same two decades.

old, long-established
Old English eald means old, and in personal names it carries the positive sense of venerable or of an established family — the same element as in ealdorman, the title behind alderman. Alden comes from Ealdwine, 'old friend'. Aldon may be a variant of that, or may take a -don ending from a place name, since Old English dun means a hill. Both readings are proposed and neither is settled.
