Albino is a Roman name roughly two thousand years older than the English word now sitting on top of it. Albinus was a Latin family name from the word for white, carried by consuls and generals and one serious claimant to the empire, and it stayed an ordinary Italian, Spanish and Portuguese given name straight through to the present. The medical term was coined far later, by Portuguese sailors, and the collision between them is entirely one-sided.

How old is the name Albino?

Where it comes from

The story of Albino

The word albino is seventeenth-century Portuguese, applied by sailors to people they met on the West African coast, and it entered scientific and then everyday English from there. The name is older by two millennia and never went anywhere: Albino has been ordinary in Italy, Spain and Portugal since the Roman family name turned into a Christian saint's name. Its most visible modern bearer was Albino Luciani, the patriarch of Venice who became pope for thirty-three days and did one thing in that time that no pope had ever done before him. He took two names instead of one, John Paul, to honor both of his immediate predecessors at once. Every pope since who has used a double name is following a precedent set by a man called Albino.

Meaning

white

From the Latin word for white or bright, through the Roman family name Albinus. Roman names of that class were often descriptive to begin with, of coloring or build or habit, and were then inherited by people the description did not fit in the slightest, which is exactly how they stopped being nicknames and became names. The French saint's name Aubin and the surname that follows from it come from the same word along a different road.

How the name formed

  1. Albinus, a Roman family name from the word for white
  2. A saint's name, and French Aubin alongside it
  3. Albino, ordinary in Italy, Spain and Portugal
  4. The English word albino, coined much later and separately

Fashion outlook

Albino sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a genuine Latin name with a continuous record and no invention anywhere in it.
  • It is said the same way in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, which covers a great deal of ground.
  • Al is available immediately for anyone who wants a completely plain everyday form.
What to consider
  • In English-speaking countries the medical word arrives first and the name second, and that order is not going to change.
  • The stress will be misplaced by people who know the word and have never met the name.
