Albina
Feminine · “white”
Roman family names were often blunt about appearance. Rufus was the red one, Niger the dark one, Flavus the fair one, Albinus the pale one. Most of those descriptions stayed surnames and died with Rome. Albina is one of the few that turned into a name people still give their daughters.

The story of Albina
A Roman had a personal name, a clan name and a cognomen, and the cognomen was frequently a nickname that stuck: about the body, the temper, or an ancestor's one memorable act. Albinus, the pale one, was among the common ones, and its feminine passed into Christian use in late antiquity, when Roman families kept their cognomina as baptismal names. From there it settled into Italian, Spanish, Polish, Czech and Croatian, and it is widely used in Russia and among Tatar families. It reached American records with the European migrations of the nineteenth century and has been quiet ever since.

The trade-off
- A settled Latin meaning and a record running back two thousand years.
- Said identically in at least five languages.
- Three short forms in real use, one of which is a name of its own.
- It shares its root and its first two syllables with albino, and that will be noticed.
- It looks like a feminine of Albert and is not related: Albert is Germanic, Albina is Latin.
- It is strongly represented among the oldest generations of several European communities, which gives it a distinct period sound.
