Alane
Feminine
Alane sits in a genuinely ambiguous place. Read one way it is a feminine of Alan, made the French way by adding a silent e. Read the other way it is a respelling of Elaine with the first vowel opened out. The registers contain both kinds of family, using the same five letters, and there is no way to tell them apart from the outside.

Where it comes from

The story of Alane
Alan came into England with the Conqueror's Breton contingent, and it came in numbers. Brittany supplied a large part of the invading army, its lords were rewarded with enormous English estates, and the name of their most prominent man was carried by tenants, godsons and imitators until it was one of the commonest men's names in the north of England. That is an unusual route for a name: not a saint, not a king, not a book, but a single body of settlers arriving at once with their own name stock. The feminine forms are much later and were made in French and then in English by the ordinary device of adding a silent e, which changes the look of a name and, in English, changes almost nothing about the sound. Elaine arrived by a different road entirely, out of the Arthurian romances, and the two families have been colliding on paper ever since.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Neither possible parent yields a meaning. Alan has resisted explanation for a thousand years; the Breton and Gaelic readings offered for it are guesses laid over a name that arrived in England already old. Elaine is an Old French form of Helen, and Helen's own meaning has never been established either. So both roads lead to the same honest place, which is that this is a real inherited name whose sense was lost long before anybody thought to write it down.
How the name formed

Fashion outlook
Alane sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, clean and free of silent letters beyond the final e, which does real work.
- Lane sits inside it as a modern short form that needs no explanation at all.
- It reads as familiar without being any of the names it resembles.
- It will be read as a typo for Elaine or for Alan by people meeting it in writing.
- The stress is genuinely unsettled between the two readings, so introductions need care.
- There is no meaning to give, and both possible parents are unexplained themselves.
