Aitana
Feminine · “From the Sierra de Aitana”
Aitana is a mountain before it is a name: the Sierra de Aitana rises behind the Costa Blanca in Alicante, on Spain's Mediterranean coast, and Spanish families began giving the mountain's name to daughters in the twentieth century. Said aloud it runs on three open vowels, with the weight landing softly in the middle. In the United States it is a genuinely recent arrival, still climbing.

The story of Aitana
The name begins as geography — a limestone ridge in the province of Alicante, one of the highest points in the Valencian Community. Spanish parents took it up as a girl's name over the course of the twentieth century, and by the early 2000s it was widely used across Spain, Catalan- and Castilian-speaking regions alike. It reached United States records only in the 1990s, and its footing here is strongest in Texas, California and Florida. The Spanish footballer Aitana Bonmatí has since carried it onto stadium screens worldwide, which is a large part of why English speakers now recognize it at all.

From the Sierra de Aitana, a mountain range in Alicante, Spain
That the name comes from the mountain is not in doubt. What the mountain's own name means is: scholars have proposed both pre-Roman and Arabic layers for it, and neither reading has won. A separate popular explanation links Aitana to Basque aita, 'father', but that connection is not established.

Pronouncing Aitana
eye-TAH-nah
The Spanish ai is the vowel in 'eye'. English speakers often reach for 'ay-TAH-nah' instead, which is close enough that it usually passes, but the eye- opening is the Spanish one.

The Patrice test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aitana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Patrice climbed just as high around 1958, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Patrice's path sketches the road Aitana is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled exactly as it sounds in Spanish, and one syllable at a time in English — most people get it on the second try.
- One spelling, no rival variants competing for it, in both Spanish and English use.
- Three even syllables ending in -a, which sits comfortably beside both short and long surnames.
- Has established short forms — Tana in English, Aitanita in Spanish — rather than needing one invented.
- Carried by a world-famous Spanish footballer, so recognition is growing fast outside Spanish-speaking circles.
- Outside Spanish-speaking communities it is still unfamiliar enough that she will spell it aloud fairly often, and hear 'ay' where 'eye' belongs.
- It sits close to Ayana, Aiyana and Atiana in sound, so mishearings are more likely than misspellings.
- The American wave is very new, so nearly everyone with this name here is a small child — it will read as a young name for another generation or two, then simply as a name.
- Meaning-wise, the mountain is certain but the mountain's own etymology is not, so there is no tidy one-word translation to give relatives who ask.
