Aidyn
Feminine · “little fire”

The y in Aidyn sits in the syllable nobody stresses, which is exactly where respellings go. That second vowel is reduced to almost nothing in speech, so it can be written e, i, a or y at no cost at all — and the y is the one that signals a deliberate choice. The name underneath belonged to an Irish monk who converted a kingdom by walking to it.

The story of Aidyn
Aidan came from Iona at the request of a Northumbrian king, set up on the tidal island of Lindisfarne, and spent his life walking the roads of the north talking to people — Bede says he refused a horse because it would put him above those he wanted to meet. The monastery he founded produced the Lindisfarne Gospels. His name went quiet for a thousand years and then returned in the 1990s to become the single most influential sound in American boys' naming, taking its ending with it into Jayden, Braden and a hundred more. The y-spellings belong to the crowded end of that wave, when families wanted the name and a way to mark their own.
Meaning
little fire
From the Irish Aodhán, a diminutive of Aodh, which is the Irish word for fire and was also the name of a figure in pre-Christian Irish belief. The diminutive ending is affectionate rather than literal — Irish attaches it freely, and it does not mean the fire was small.

The Paz test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aidyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Paz climbed just as high around 1916, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Paz's path sketches the road Aidyn is walking now.
Aidyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It sounds identical to a name every American knows, so nothing has to be explained aloud.
- There is a real Irish saint behind it with a documented and appealing life.
- The y marks the spelling as chosen without making the name unreadable.
- It is recorded for both boys and girls, though it leans strongly to boys.
- Aiden, Aidan, Aden and Aydin all compete, so the spelling has to be dictated forever.
- The name belongs unmistakably to one naming wave and will date a child's birth to within a few years.
- Because the difference is silent, nobody learns the spelling by hearing it.
Nobody names a baby alone.
