The story of Ahtziri
Purepecha, also called Tarascan, is spoken by around a hundred thousand people in Michoacan and is one of a very small number of languages worldwide with no established relatives; every attempt to link it to Quechua, to Mayan or to the Uto-Aztecan family has failed. The Purepecha kingdom was the one major state the Aztecs never conquered. Mexican naming has drawn on indigenous languages deliberately since the twentieth century as an assertion of identity, and Nahuatl, Maya, Zapotec and Purepecha names have all entered general use. Ahtziri reached United States records with Mexican migration and had its best year in 2009.

The Carlita test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ahtziri's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Carlita climbed just as high around 1953, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Carlita's path sketches the road Ahtziri is walking now.
Ahtziri sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A genuine indigenous Mexican name from a language with no relatives anywhere.
- Three open syllables once the tz is managed, so it is not hard to say.
- Distinctive and entirely unlike anything else in American records.
- The meanings printed for it are not verified.
- The tz cluster and the h will defeat most English readers.
- Atziri without the h is the more common Mexican spelling.
