Where it comes from

Our story of Agness

Every January two lambs are brought to a basilica in Rome in decorated baskets and blessed during the service. They are then kept, shorn in the spring, and the wool is woven by a community of nuns into narrow bands of white cloth marked with crosses. Those bands are the pallium, worn over the shoulders by metropolitan archbishops as the sign of their office, and each new one is given by the pope. The chain runs unbroken from a live animal in a basket to a garment on a man's shoulders on the other side of the world, and it happens every year on the same date.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Greek name means chaste or pure, and the Latin word for a lamb is a separate word that attached itself later by resemblance. The two readings have been tangled for so long that both are current.

Fashion outlook

Agness sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Aggie and Nessa are both available as short forms and both are established.
  • The name behind it is ancient and used across the whole of Europe.
  • It is read correctly at first sight by nearly everybody.
What to consider
  • Agnes is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected to it constantly.
  • In America it reads as belonging to a much older generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
  • The doubled letter cannot be heard, so the spelling has to be given aloud every time.
