Aeson
Masculine
Aeson is a Greek king with a hard story: he is Jason's father, deposed by his half-brother, and the whole voyage of the Argo happens because his son goes to get the throne back. He is in the myth as a reason rather than an actor.

The story of Aeson
Aison is the rightful king of Iolcus in Thessaly, displaced by Pelias, and it is to reclaim the kingdom that Jason is sent after the golden fleece. In some tellings Medea restores him to youth by draining his blood and replacing it, which is among the stranger things in a body of stories that has a good deal of competition. The name is rare in English at any period, and its recent American appearances belong to the wider return of classical names alongside Odysseus, Orion and Cassius.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Greek Aison has no established derivation. It is one of a large group of names in the older Greek myths that appear to predate Greek itself, taken over from whatever was spoken in the region before — the same is true of Odysseus and of a good many place-names. Readings have been proposed and none has carried. The modern American use also reads it as A- plus the -eson ending, which is a separate matter.

EE-sun
Two syllables, stress on the first — the ae is a single long e in English, as in Aegean. AY-sun is also heard from readers taking the ae as an a, and the name is uncommon enough that neither has settled.

The Nicholis test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aeson's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nicholis climbed just as high around 1988, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nicholis's path sketches the road Aeson is walking now.
Aeson sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented figure in one of the oldest Greek stories, with a real place in it.
- Ace is a natural short form and an established name of its own.
- Two syllables and no genuinely difficult sounds.
- The ae opening is read two ways and the name is rare enough that neither is standard.
- Its meaning is genuinely unknown, since the name predates the Greek that would explain it.
- It sits close to Jason and Ayson and gets misheard as both.
