Our story of Aerith
Our story of Aerith is a story of a name made by an alphabet problem. Japanese katakana does not distinguish the sounds English writes as s and th at the end of a word, so the character's name could come out either way, and the 1997 English release chose Aeris while later ones chose Aerith. The developers have since said the second was intended and meant to echo 'earth'. American families began registering it in the 2000s, and its entire history is that one dispute and what followed.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No inherited etymology. The character's Japanese name was written in katakana that English could render as either Aeris or Aerith; the developers have said Aerith was intended, built to suggest 'earth'. Whether that reading was designed from the start is disputed among the developers themselves.

The Carlita test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aerith's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Carlita climbed just as high around 1953, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Carlita's path sketches the road Aerith is walking now.
Aerith sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- That the name exists because two writing systems disagree is a genuinely unusual origin.
- It is rare enough to be immediately distinctive.
- Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk once heard.
- There is no inherited meaning and no history before 1997.
- One video game dominates the association entirely.
- The ae- spelling will need dictating every time.
