Adron
Masculine
Adron is a Southern name with no paperwork. It came up in Texas, Kentucky, Alabama and Georgia at the turn of the last century, ran for a couple of generations, and stopped — and in all that time no reference book has ever managed to say where it came from. It is not a corruption of anything anyone can prove. It is simply a name some American families used.

The story of Adron
The best-documented Adron ran a college. Adron Doran was born in western Kentucky at the height of the name's short run, served as Speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives, and then spent more than two decades — from the middle 1950s to the late 1970s — as president of Morehead State University in the eastern hills of the state, turning a small teachers' college into a university. The student center on that campus carries his name, which is a strange kind of afterlife: for most people who have ever read the word Adron, it was on a building.
Meaningnot established
Not established
There are three respectable guesses and no evidence for any of them. Adron may be Aaron respelled by ear, with a d that the tongue puts there anyway between an n and an r. It may be Adrian clipped short. It may be a surname that moved to the front, as hundreds of American first names did in the nineteenth century. Dictionaries of given names either omit it or hedge, and the honest position is that a name can be perfectly real and still have no recoverable origin. Adron is one of those.
How the name formed
- appears in Southern records at the turn of the century
- concentrated in Texas, Kentucky and the Deep South
- passes down as a family name rather than a fashion
- a Kentucky college president carries it into print
- effectively out of use within living memory
Pronouncing Adron
AY-drun
Most of the record says AY-drun, rhyming with the front of Adrian. Some families say AD-run with a short first vowel. Both are in living use and there is no authority to appeal to.

Fashion outlook
Adron sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, entirely pronounceable, and looks like an established name rather than a new one.
- It carries a real regional history without being tied to a famous bearer who would overshadow the child.
- Nobody will have a strong association with it, good or bad, which is rarer than it sounds.
- It will be heard as Aaron and written as Aaron, constantly, because Aaron is a hundred times commoner.
- Outside the South it reads as unplaceable — not old-fashioned, not modern, just unfamiliar.
- There is no meaning to tell a curious child, and no honest way to invent one.
